Mudita: Embracing Joy

“Dear one, I know that you are here, and it makes me happy.”

True love is incomplete without joy, or mudita, the third essential element of love. Joy is the heartbeat of authentic connection, a light that lifts relationships above pain and suffering. Without joy, love becomes distorted—a shadow of its true essence. If love is marked by constant tears, anguish, and mutual sorrow, it no longer embodies love but its opposite. In true love, joy flows naturally, enriching both giver and receiver.

Go Inward

To cultivate joy in love, we must first nurture it within ourselves. This inward journey requires deep listening and reflection, as we turn our awareness to the patterns and blockages within us that hinder joy. Through meditation and patient introspection, we unlock an inner reservoir of happiness. This process is not separate from our external relationships—rather, the joy we find in ourselves radiates outward, enriching our bonds. When our children see us joyful and hear us express our happiness, they not only feel secure but also learn the value of celebrating life’s awe.

Find Delight

Mudita also invites us to rejoice in the happiness of others. Through mudita, we learn to find delight not only in our own joy but also in the happiness of those we love. As parents, embodying mudita means sharing in our children’s delight—whether grand achievements or small successes. Sometimes joy even comes after their setbacks. By celebrating their joys, we foster attachment, strengthen connection, and build a reservoir of positive memories.

Here are practical ways to embrace mudita:

  • Celebrate Victories - Acknowledge even minor accomplishments with heartfelt enthusiasm. Focus on their effort and process rather than the outcome or achievement.

  • Engage in Joyful Activities - Play, explore, and laugh together to create shared moments of delight. Physical touch and connection allow the positive energies to flow back and forth.

  • Express Gratitude - Teach children to appreciate life’s little blessings and moments of happiness. Create a practice of sharing one moment of joy from the day. This could be at a meal or before bedtime.
